Medical Alert Bracelets are a must if you have certain diseases or are on special medications. Think about it this way, if you were in an accident and knocked unconscious, there would be no way to let the emergency personnel to know that you were an insulin dependent diabetic, or that you had a previous heart attack or stroke. In this case a medical alert bracelet would be able to tell the emergency personnel everything they needed to know, including your name. The typical reasons to wear a medical alert bracelet are:

Diabetes – Insulin Dependent or oral medication

High Blood Pressure

Heart Attack

Stroke

Heart Bypass Surgery

Has Seizures

Takes Insulin

Takes Aspirin

Allergies to medications

10. Takes Blood Thinners

Medical alert bracelets come in all shapes, sizes and forms.

Stainless Steel – The basic, bottom of the line and comes in either a bracelet or dog tags. These usually are the cheapest and most affordable.

Gold plated – A little more expensive, but can only be worn by people that can wear plated jewelry.

Sterling Silver – Just a little more expensive, but very nice.

Gold – This is the most expensive, but the nicest and can be worn by people that have intolerance to gold plated jewelry.

There are now companies that offer specialty medical alert bracelets. You can get braided leather and cotton bands. Some company’s offer free engraving, some do not. There is one organization that makes the bracelets out of all different kinds of beads, to match outfit that you have. They even have leather bands that will hold a water proof strip to make your list on. There are dog tags on chains. The dog tags are encased in a rubber edging to keep it from cutting you and to protect the tag edges itself.

Medical alert bracelets are a must have for children with special conditions or allergies. Anyone with any of the special conditions listed above should seriously consider a medical alert

For seniors at home by themselves or for handicapped people; Medical Alert systems can be a live savor. You never know when the unexpected is going to happen and you will need the help of medical experts.

Here are some frequently asked questions about the Medical Alert system:

How easy is it to sign up? It’s as easy as picking up the phone and dialing a number. The operators of the different Medical Alert system companies are trained to ask the appropriate questions to help get you the system matched just to you. They will ask for a “Notify” list from you. This is a list of people that you wish to be contacted after professional help has been dispatched. The companies keep your medical and contact information confidential, so you don’t have to worry about anybody and everybody knowing what goes on in your home.

How do I pay for this service? All Medical Alert companies are set up to take credit cards and checks that are automatically withdrawn each month from you checking accounts. These payments can be set up to be taken out monthly, quarterly, and annually. Believe it or not some even take PayPal payments, as well.

How soon can my service be started? Most Medical Alert companies will ship your Medical Alert system the same day you call. There are several shipping options available.

Who will install my system? Actually, there is no technical installation efforts needed. The alert system just plugs into the wall plug, you then press the button to make the connection with the Medical Alert monitoring center and you are all set.

What if my door is locked and I need help from the EMS? You can order optional key lockboxes that attaches to your home. It looks a lot like a real estate lockbox but has a combination lock on it. The EMS is given the code to be able to access your home safely.

What about taking the system on vacation? You can take your entire Medical Alert system with you, just notify the company that you are going to be traveling, plug the system into the wall plug, push the button and you are all set again. Simple as 1, 2, 3.

What happens if I no longer need the system? Simple, just return the Medical Alert system to the company as per their instruction. There are usually no long term contracts to tie you down.

Creating an environment for prevention of accidents and falls should be very important to you when having an older person in the home. Here are a few tips that aid you in making your home safe.

1.Have a nightlight in the bedroom, hallway and bathroom. It might not be a bad idea to have one in the kitchen as well. This keeps your loved ones from stumbling around in dark when getting out of bed for a drink of water of going to the bathroom.

2.It’s best not to have throw rugs on the floor. Rugs will curl and cause someone to trip over the edge and fall.

3.Make sure when you mop the floor that, it is completely dried before anyone is allowed to walk on it. Wet floors are very dangerous.

4.Never plug up and item and leave the cord strung across the floor. Anyone can get their toes caught on the cord and down they will go.

5.If you have carpet covered stairs in your house, you need to make sure the carpet has no frayed areas. The best thing to do is to put a runner on the stair and make sure you tack it down on each stair so it won’t move.

6.It there are broken stairs in your home, make sure they are repaired or replaced.

7.Always keep charged flashlights in each room in case the power goes out.

8.Clutter can be a biggie. Having shoes, book, toys, or clothes around can cause major falls. Everything should be put away.

9.When there is a spill on the floor, make sure it gets cleaned up immediately. If forgotten, sometimes spills can’t be easily seen and will cause your feet to slip.

10.Use non-skid bathtub/shower mat in your bathrooms. You might want to consider a shower chair for ease.

11.Absolutely avoid using the sink to pull yourself up off the toilet. There are raised seats that you can install very easily.

12.Install wall grab bars in the shower, on walls around the tub and around your toilet.

13.Avoid having furniture or chairs that is hard to get up out of.You can purchase lift chairs that make falls almost impossible when getting up from a sitting position.

14.It is nice to have a phone in every room and that is easily accessible in case you need to make a call to 911.
